The Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal

Even today, more than six hundred years after the death of Saint Hazrat Shah Jalal, the shrine is visited by innumerable devotees of every caste and creed, who make the journey from far away places. Legend says, the great saint who came from Delhi to preach Islam, defeated the then Hindu Raja (king) Gour Gobinda. He transformed the witchcraft followers of the Raja into catfishes which are still alive in the tank adjacent to the shrine Swords. The holy Quran and the robes of the holy saint are still preserved in the shrine.

Shahi Eidgah

The Shahi Eidgah is situated on a hillock at the south-easten end of Sylhet city. There are twenty steps of stairs to the Shahi Eidgah. The area is surrounded by encircling wall. The main mihrab is on the central position of Qibal wall and it is built through a half dome. The central mihrab has some other subsidiary mihrabs on either side. The wall has two octagonal corner towers with kiosk which make the structure attractive. The Eidgah has three entrances and in front of this picturesque structure there is a tank for ablution. the Shahi Eidgah was built by the Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb in the 17th century. It is not protected building and later renovated by local people. It looks like a grade fort but is actually meant for Eid congregations, the two biggest Muslim festivals.

About 500 years old famous temple of Sri Chaitanya Dev is located at Dhaka Dakhin about 45 km south-east from Sylhet town. The place is revered from being the ancestral home of the famous Vaishnava saint. Yearly fair is organised on the fullmoon day of the Bangla month Falgun. Hundreds and thousands of devotees from home and abroad attend this colorful fair.

Haripur Gas Field

Twenty two kilometers from Sylhet town is the Haripur Gas Field and at 35 km. point is the Jaintiapur's Rajbari. Only 5 km. from Jaintiapur is Jaflong, a scenic spot amidst tea gardens. At about 35 km. north-west of Sylhet town, linked by rail, road and river is Chhatak, the seat of Assam Bengal Cement Factory, Chhatak is famous for orange garden.

Jointapur Rajbari

Jointapur Rajbari:. Jaintiapur is only 5 km. from Jaflong. Jointapur was the capital of Jainta Kingdome at 18th century. Jainta Rajbari was the palace of Kings of Jainta, it’s just adjacent of Jainta Bazar. Though the condition of this kings palace is already damaged enormously but a huge number of tourists visit here due to the historical background of Jainta Kingdom. A lots of picnic parties goes to Jaintapur forests and also other areas of Jaflong, Sripur and Tamabil to enjoy a full day in the nature. So if you are planning to visit Jaflong you must cover up all these places at a time and by the evening you come back to Sylhet for your night stay.

Sripur:

Sripur is another beautiful tourist spot where you can see the waterfall with great tide falling form the hills. Besides the enchanting views of the area, one can also have a glimpse of the waterfalls across the border of India. Very Big stones sometimes are coming in this waterfall in Sripur. After completion of visiting Jaflong and Tamabil you must visit Sripur on the way to go back to Sylhet. It's only 7-8km from Jaflong on the same road to Sylhet a sub road entered into Sripur waterfall. Here you can see the stone collection and orange garden if you go inside Sripur crossing the hills.

Jaflong

Jaflong is one of the most attractive tourist spots in Sylhet division. It's about 60 km far from Sylhet town and takes two hours drive to reach there. Jaflong is also a scenic spot nearby amidst tea gardens and rate beauty of rolling stones from hills. It is situated besides the river Peain in the lap of Hill Khashia. The Mari river is coming from the great Himalayas of India, which bringing million tons of stone boulders with its tide. You can watch the stone collection from the river in Jaflong as well as you can enjoy the boating in the river Mari. Jaflong is totally a hilly area of real natural beauty where hills are greenish with the forests. Lots of wild animal lives in this forest, so you need to be careful to enter in the forest alone. You can see the lifestyle of Tribe Khashia in Jaflong. If you intend to visit Jaflong it is advisable to start from Sylhet in the early morning so that you can comeback by evening covering the other tourists spots of nearby areas of Jaflong. The other tourist areas nearby Jaflong are Tamabil, Sripur and Jaintapur.

Tamabil

Situated amidst splendid panorama, Tamabil is a border outpost on Sylhet-Shilong Road about 55 km. away from Sylhet town. Besides enchanting views of the area one can also have a glimpse of the waterfalls across the border from Tamabil. Tamabil is the border area with India and is 05 km before Jaflong. If you intend to visit Shilong of India then you will have to cross this border by completing your customs formalities. To go to India you require valid Visa.

Srimongol

Srimongal is the place of tea gardens, hills and forest areas on the hills. Within your eyesight you will find green throughout. Its is famous for the largest tea gardens of world covered by lush green carpet. One can have a look into the spectacular tea processing at Tea Research Institute. Bangladesh produces and exports a large quantity of high quality tea every year. Most of the tea estates are in Srimongol. It is called "The land of two leaves and a bud". It is also called camellia, green carpet or Tea Mountain. There are a lot of tea estates including the largest one in the world. The terraced tea garden, pineapple, rubber and lemon plantations from a beautiful landscape. It is known as the tea capital in Bangladesh. Just offer entering into the tea estates the nice smells and green beauty will lead you many kilometers away. There are some hotels in Srimongol where you can stay, but if you can manage to stay in the Tea garden that will give you a different type of memorable experience. For that you will have to take the permission from the owner of any tea state.

Madhobkunda Waterfall

From Kulaura rail station its about one hour journey by microbus to Madhabkunda. The journey to Madhabkunda itself is exotic. On the way you can see the greenish beauty of tea garden, the hills and the zigzag road through the hills will increase the joy of your journey. In Madhabkunda you will see the great waterfall - falls of million tons of water form 200ft. height. Big bolder of stones and the black stones in giving a shape of care in Madhabkundu. There is a Parjatan Motel with a good restaurant for accommodation and fooding. There is also a district council Bunglow for night stay. Here you can enjoy adventurous feelings to stay in a jungle. All you need to have a prior booking for the bunglow from Moulvibazar Zilla Parishad office.

Lawacherra Rain Forest

Lawacherra Rain Forest is one of the important & well-reserved forests in Bangladesh. Here visitor may see gibbons swimming through the trees and birds like bee-eater owls parrot. It is a good habitant of Deer, leopard, wild chicken, squirrel, and python. Don't miss it especially if you are bird watcher. The terrain is hilly and vegetation is fairly thick. Only one rare Chloroform tree of Asia is prime attraction. Khasia & Manipuri is two important ethnic-tribe live here. Manipuri is famous for its rich culture especially for dancing, singing. They are also famous for their traditional weaving. You can buy their handicrafts exquisitely woven woolen. Shawls, Sharee, Napkin, bed-cover and some should a bags. It is known as colorful community. Khasia tribe is famous for their betel leaf cultivation. They make their villages high on hilltop in deep forest and so far from town. It is like "A Piece of Paradise". Certainly it will please you.

Tanguar Haor

Tanguar Haor, located in the district of Sunamganj in the north-eastern part of Bangladesh, is a unique wetland ecosystem of national and international importance covering about 10,000 hectares. It provides subsistence and livelihoods to more then 40,000 people living in 46 villages situated in its periphery. The Government has declared Tanguar Haor as an Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) in 1999 understanding its critical condition due to overexploitation of natural resource. In 2000, the Hoar basin was also declared as the country's second Ramsar site-wetland of international importance. With this declaration, the Government of Bangladesh is committed to preserve its natural resources and have taken several steps for protection of this wetland. The Tanguar Haor plays an important role in fish production as it functions as a 'mother fishery' for the country.

Hazrat Shah Jalal (R)

Shah Jalal was a saint of Bengal and is the most celebrated personality of the region of Sylhet, Bangladesh. Shah Jalal commands great respect of Muslims of the Indian subcontinent and is regarded as a national hero by Bangladeshis. Shah Jalal's name is associated with the Muslim conquest of Sylhet, of which he is considered to be the main figure. He lies buried at Sylhet

Early life and education

Born Shaikh Makhdum Jalal ad-Deen bin Mohammed, he was later affectionately renamed Shaikh-ul-Mashaikh Hazrat Shah Jalal al-Mujarrad (the last name meaning "the bachelor", on account of his celibacy). Shah Jalal's date and place of birth is unclear. Various traditions, folklore and hostorical documents suggest different ideas. A number of scholars claim that he was born in 1271 in Konya, Turkey, and later moved to Yemen, either as a child or adult, while others contest he was born in Yemen. He was the son of a Turkish Muslim cleric, who was a contemporary of the famous Persian poet and Sufi saint, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi. He was educated and raised by his maternal uncle, Syed Ahmed Kabir, in Mecca. He excelled in his studies and became a Hafiz (one who has committed the Qur'an to memory) and was proficient in Islamic theology. He achieved Kamaliyat (spiritual perfection) after 30 years of study and meditation.

Travel to India

According to legend, his uncle, Sheikh Kabir, one day gave Shah Jalal a handful of earth (soil) and asked him to travel to Hindustan with the instruction that he should settle down at whichever place in Hindustan whose earth matched completely in smell and color to the earth he was given, and he should devote his life for the propagation and establishment of Islam there.

Shah Jalal journeyed eastward and reached India in c. 1300, where he met with many great scholars and mystics. He arrived at Ajmer, where he met the great Sufi mystic and scholar, Pir Khawaja Gharibnawaz Muinuddin Hasan Chisty, who is credited with the spread of Islam in India. In Delhi, he met with Nizam Uddin Aulia, another major Sufi mystic and scholar.

Conquest of Sylhet

Tradition goes that a Hindu king named Gaur Govinda ruled the Sylhet area, then predominantly Hindu. Sheikh Burhanuddin, a Muslim who lived in the territory under his control once sacrificed a cow to celebrate the birth of his son. A bird (kite) snatched a piece of flesh of the slaughtered cow and it fell from its beak on the house of a Brahmin Hindu, for whom cows were sacred. According to another tradition, the piece of flesh fell on the temple of the king himself, which he took as a great offence. At the order of the king, Burhanuddin's hands were said to have been cut off and his son killed. Burhanuddin went to the Sultan of Gaur, Shamsuddin Firuz Shah, to whom he submitted a prayer for justice. The Sultan accordingly sent an army under the command of his nephew Sikandar Khan Ghazi. He was, however,was stopped by rains and flood. The Sultan then ordered his Sipah Salar (armed forces chief) Nasiruddin to lead the war.

At this time, Shah Jalal (R) was requested by Nizam Uddin at the behest of sultan firoz shah to travel to Sylhet along with sikander khan gazi to rescue Sheikh Burhan Uddin. With his 360 followers, including his nephew Shah Paran, he reached Bengal and joined the Muslim army in the Sylhet campaign. Knowing that Shah Jalal was advancing towards Sylhet, Raja Gaur Govinda, the king, removed all ferry boats from the river Surma, thereby cutting off any means of crossing into Sylhet. Legend has it that Shah Jalal crossed the river Surma by sitting on a Jainamaz (prayer rug). Upon reaching the opposite bank, he ordered the Azan (call to prayer) to be sounded, at which the magnificent palace of Gaur Govinda shattered. With Shah Jalal's help, the Hindus were completely defeated and crushed by the Muslim Army.The superior fighting and combat skills helped the Muslim Army.

During the later stages of his life, Shah Jalal devoted himself to propagating Islam to the masses. Under his guidance, many thousands of Hindus and Buddhists converted to Islam. Shah Jalal become so renowned that even the world famous Ibn Battuta, whilst in Chittagong, was asked to change his plans and go to Sylhet to meet this great Awlia. On his way to Sylhet, Ibn Batuta was greeted by several of Shah Jalal (R.A)'s disciples who had come to assist him on his journey many days before he had arrived. Once in the presence of Shah Jalal (R.A), Ibn Batuta noted that Shah Jalal (R.A) was tall and lean, fair in complexion and lived by the masjed in a cave, where his only item of value was a goat from which he extracted milk, butter, and yogurt. He observed that the companions of the sheikh were foreign and known for their strength and bravery. He also mentions that many people would visit the sheikh and seek guidance. Shah Jalal (R.A) is therefore instrumental in the spread of Islam throughout north east India including Assam.

Shah Poran

Shah Paran (R) was a renowned Sufi saint of the Suhrawardiyya and Jalalia order. It is said that he was the son of a sister of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) and was born in Hadramaut, Yemen. He was an accomplice of his uncle, Shah Jalal, with whom he arrived in India. In 1303 AD, He took part in the expedition of Sylhet which was led by Shah Jalal. After the conquest of Sylhet he established a khanqah at Khadim Nagar in Dakshingarh Pargana, about 7 km away from Sylhet town, where he started Sufi spiritual practices and activities. He played a significant role in propagating Islam and establishing Muslim rule in the Sylhet region.

It is unclear how and when he died, but he is buried near his khanqah. For centuries, large numbers of devotees have been visiting his tomb, a practice which continues even today. On the 4th, 5th and 6th day of Rabi-ul-Awal, the Urs of Hazrat Shah Paran (R) takes place. His grave is located in a high hillock and it is carefully preserved at a place which is built with bricks and surrounded by walls. On the northern side of the grave there is an old tree, the branches and branchlets of which are extended above the entire tomb. The name of the tree is 'Ashagachh' (a tree of hopes). From a close observation of the leaves of the tree, it appears that the tree has grown out of a mixture of the fig, mango and some other tree. People eat the seeds of the figs devotionally in the hope of getting rid of diseases. Mangoes are also eaten with utmost respect as Tabaruk. There is an ancient mosque by the side of the tomb. The mosque has been modernized in 1989-91. About 1500 devout Muslims in a body can now say their prayers there.

Adjacent to the main tomb complex of Shah Paran, found in the East of Sylhet, is another tomb visited by worshipers, that of Konya Shah. Legend has it that this follower of the great saints was neither man nor woman. There is a permanent exhibition of the life and times of this saint. Contemporary paintings and pictures featured at the tomb/exhibition depict a person most likely to be a eunuch. Though the original conquerors earned a prominent role in Islamic history, main stream Islam shuns the idea of worshiping saints and eunuchs.

Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani, better known as Banga Bir General M.A.G. Osmani (1 September 1918 – 16 February 1984) was the Supreme Commander of the Mukti Bahini and Bangladesh Armed Forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War.

Education
Osmani was born in Sunamganj, Sylhet Division on 1 September 1918. He passed matriculation from Sylhet Government Pilot School. Later, he graduated in Aligarh Muslim University, India. He was a descendant of Nizamuddin Osmani of Dayamir, Sylhet.

Military Career
In 1939, Osmani started his military career as a Gentleman Cadet during the British Raj in the Indian Military Academy at Dehra Dun. Upon completion of training at the IMA, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Indian Army as an artillery officer in 1940, during World War II. He served in the Burma sector and won the distention of a battle field promoted to a Major in 1942. After the birth of India and Pakistan in 1947 following the departure of the British Rule, Osmani joined the Pakistan Army on 7 October 1947, and was soon promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He served as an aide to the Chief of General Staff in 1949. In 1952, he served as commanding officer of the 9th battalion of the 14th Punjab Regiment, and later as additional commandant of the East Pakistan Rifles. After being promoted to Colonel in 1956, he was appointed and general staff officer of the army at the Army HQ. In 1958 Osmani held the post of deputy director of general staff and subsequently director of military operations. He retired from Pakistan Armed Forces on 16 February 1967. He was reinstated to active duty in the Bangladesh Forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War in April of 1971 and later promoted to the full rank of General during the 11-17th of July Bangladesh Sector Commanders Conference 1971. As such he was appointed C-in-C of all Bangladesh Forces during the duration of the war. He held the title of Commander-in-Chief until his retirement in April of 1972, when the Bangladesh Forces officially dissolved into four independent regular forces, the Bangladesh Army, the Bangladesh Navy, the Bangladesh Air Force and the Bangladesh Rifles

Entry into politics
After his retirement, Osmani entered the politics of East Pakistan. He joined the Sheikh Mujib-led Awami League in 1970. As a candidate from Awami League, he was elected a member of the Pakistan national assembly in the 1970 elections in Pakistan. After the commencement of Bangladesh Liberation War, Osmani became a member of the provisional government-in-exile.

Leadership during Bangladesh Liberation War
With the formation of Bangladesh government on 17 April 1971, retired Colonel Osmani was reinstated to active duty under the authority of Bangladesh government and appointed commander in chief of all Bangladesh Forces. During the historic Bangladesh Sector Commanders Conference 1971 he was promoted to General. Under his direct command, Osmani divided up the entire Bangladesh territory to 11 sectors. Each sector was under the command of a trained military officer with the title of Sector Commander. Each sector also had sub-sectors with sub sector commanders.

Post-independence activities
After the country's independence, Osmani retired from service 7 April 1972. He was then included in the cabinet of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as Minister of Shipping, Inland Water Transport and Aviation. Osmani was elected a member of the national parliament in 1973, and was included in the new cabinet with charge of the ministries of Post, Telegraph and Telephone, Communication, Shipping, Inland Water Transport and Aviation.

He resigned from the cabinet in May 1974 after the introduction of one-party system of government through the Fourth Amendment to the constitution. Along with Barrister Mainul Hosein, both elected MPs, resigned from the Awami League protesting abolishing of democracy in Bangladesh by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

MAG Osmani was appointed an Adviser to the President in charge of Defense Affairs by Khondaker Mostaq Ahmed (then President and Law Minister currently) on 29 August 1975. But he resigned immediately after the killing of four national leaders inside the Dhaka Central Jail on 3 November.

Hason Raja

Hason Raja literally Hason the king, was a mystical poet and songwriter in Bengal, now Bangladesh. Born at the end of the 19th century 1854 to a traditional Zamindar or landowner family near Sunamganj, Sylhet, though his ancestral home is in Rampasha, Biswanath, Sylhet. Hason indulged himself in material pursuits in his youth. Later, he came to believe worldly pleasures are meaningless and wrote songs that have been described as some of the most thoughtful songs, touching the deepest emotions of the human mind.

Hason's father, Dewan Ali Raja (Choudhury), was a direct descendant of the Hindu king Raja Birendra Singhdev, (who later converted to Islam and became known as Babu Khan). Hason's mother was Ali Raja's second wife, Huramat Jahan Begum. As befitted Hason's ancestry, he was tall, handsome and charming, with a regal manner and dress sense.

Hason's elder half-brother, Ubeydur Raja, died when Hason was a teenager. The death of Ali Raja, about 40 days later, meant Hason became responsible for overseeing his father's vast property at an early age. Despite his youth when taking on this responsibility, he proved to be a very successful Zamindar, acquiring acres of land and many properties in Sylhet. Yet, despite his financially privileged upbringing, Hason is credited with setting up a number of local schools and religious organizations, and is said to have frequently provided for the poor and needy of his community.

Hason Raja had four sons, Khan Bahadur Dewan Ganiur Raja, Hasinur Raja, Khan Bahadur Dewan Eklimur Raja Chowdhury (Kabbo Bisharod) and Aftabur Raja. Dewan Eklimur Raja ofllowed in his footsteps and also wrote poetry and songs; he was also known as the architect of modern poetry of Sylhet area. Dewan Hason Raja donated one third of his property as Waqf in 1918 for the well being of the people and offspring's of his beloved son Eklimur Raja.

Hason Raja's songs are in the folk tradition of Bengal that seeks the ultimate truth beyond the material world. They include songs such as 'Lokey bole', published in his book of songs, Hason Udas. In recent times, they have been modernized and are very popular in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. Many book and musical CDs has been published so far on great mystic poet Hason Raja.

Hason Raja died in 1922, years before his contribution to the poetry of Bengal was mentioned in lectures at Oxford University by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Hason Raja is also known as Dewan Hasan Raja. A beautiful museum namely, Museum of Rajas' has been established in his ancestral home at Raja - Kunjo, Sylhet, Bangladesh; where historical exhibits of Hason Raja, Eklimur Raja, Talibur Raja (grandson) and other respected Rajas' are displayed. The sponsors of this spectacular Museum is 'Educationist Dewan Talibur Raja Trust'.

Shah Abdul Karim is a Bangladeshi musician. His specialized field of music is Bengali Baul music. He lives in the district of Sunamganj. He was rewarded the Ekushey Padok in the year 2001 for his songs, also received Drouhee Kotha-shahitayk Abdur Rouf Choudhury Award in 2000.

He was born in 1916 in Ujandhal, Dirai, in Sunamganj. This is one of the remote village of Bangladesh, where Abdul Karim born. Growing up with poverty, he started expressing his thoughts and emotions from very early age. Ektara, an instrument of music being his medium to express his thoughts, villager’s heart melted with his melodic and soothing voice. With so many time devoted in singing, hardly he could make time to make his way to think about livelihood or any other job than entertaining people. But he was forced to earn living hardship by harvesting. But Music never left him even with so much obstacles and poverty. As the time goes by, and as he was maturing with age, he went on taking training of spiritual and baul music from Kamal Uddin, Shadhak Rashid Uddin, Shah Ibrahim Mastan Baksh. His versatility ranged from Baul song, Spiritual song to Bhatiali. He went on learning all the exclusive modules of Baul song afterwards along with Shariatti, Marfatti, Nabuot, Belaya. The various devout form of music. He was motivated by philosophy of renowned Lalan Shah, Panju Shah and Duddu Shah

Musical works

Baul Shah Abdul Karim has written and composed as many as 1500 songs. These songs are organized in six books, like: Aftab Sangeet, Gano Sangeet, Kalnir Dheu, Dholmela, Bhatir Chithi and Kalnir Kooley. Bangla Academy has translated ten of his songs into English language.

Shah Abdul Karim is the living legend of Baul songs. He is versatile genius has lived a very simple life. But with the emergence of Baul songs in Bangladesh he has been honored the way he should have been a long time ago.

Natural Resource

The grater Sylhet region is the most enriched area of Bangladesh in mineral resources. A large quantity of the total proven gas reserve and the only oil field of the country are located here. The area has also vast deposit of limestone, peat, glass-sand hard- rock grave. But the economic value of hydrocarbon reserves are overwhelmingly dominant. The region is geologically known as the Surma Basin and covers the north-eastern parts of the foredeep and Folded-Belt division of the Bengal Basin which happens to be one of the most prominent tectonically-active sedimentary basins of the world. Parts of the Sylhet region which are apparently flat having are within the foredeep division while the hilly areas are called folded Belt. Thickness of the sedimentary pile with the foredeep area is in excess of 15 kilometers; the Folded Belt representing the uplifted parts of this sedimentary pile. This huge sedimentary body is dominantly composed of sand and mud with subordinated limestone which started depositing in a deep-basement (bottom of the basin being composed of igneous-metamorphic complex) basin about 5o million years ago with the gradual rise of the Himalayas due to collision between Indian and Burmese Plates and subsequent erosion. The sand-mud composition of the sedimentary body, along with technically-developed favorable structural set up (exposed and covered folds and faults mainly) have made the Sylhet region highly potential for occurrence of natural resources. Muds act as sources, sands as reservoirs, while folds (anticlines) act as traps for hydrocarbons (gas and oil). Age of the sediments, local geothermal gradient, pressure of the overburden etc. have been sufficient for the source materials to be"cooked" to from hydrocarbon.

Natural Gas:

There are eight gas fields located in Sylhet region. Also the first 3 gas fields of the country were discovered in this region between mid 1950s and early 60s – Sylhet gas field in 1955, Chatak in 1959 and Rashidpur in 1960. These predate the discovery of Titas gas field which is at present the largest natural gas supplier of the country. Other gas fields of the region according to their year of discovery are Koilastila 1962, Hobigonj 1963, Beanibazar 1981, Fenchugonj 1988 and Jalalabad 1989. All these reserves have been discovered in structural traps formed by mild folds (anticlines) that occur in the subsurface and have no direct surface expressions. The intensity of these folds increase west to east in the direction of the Folded Belt region; which relates to the development of grater thrust in that direction due to tectonic activity. However, the discovery gas fields are mostly located in the nearly-plan lands of along the western fringe zones of the intensively folded areas. Gas is discovered within sandstone layers of Bhuban and Bokabil formations in the subsurface, which is about 35 million years old. Sandstone act as good reservoirs because of their high porosity; however, the gas is generated in some neighboring clayey layers with high organic contents and lager migrates to the sandy units, which are sealed by impervious sedimentary layers. Impervious layers prevent further migration of the gas. Total reserve of the gas fields of the Sylhet region is about 14 trillion cubic feet with a recoverable reserve of about 8.5 tcf.

Crude oil:

The only oil field of the country is located in Haripur of the Sylhet district, which, was discovered in 1986. Although a relatively large quantity of gas has been discovered in the county, the amount of oil discovery is very small. This is in a sharp contrast to many hydrocarbon provinces of the world where large volumes of both gas and oil co-exist. Geologists of our country are somewhat confused by this reality and most opine that exploration into even deeper sedimentary layers then those producing gas may help discover oil. The Horipur oil is discovered in sandstone layers within a subsurface fold called Sylhet Anticline which is about 13 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide; producing horizons are around 2000 meters depths and two closely spaced oil-horizons have been detected. Maximum oil reserve is estimated to be around 21 million barrels. Oil production under natural pressure was 400 barrels per day in 1987 which dropped to about 100 barrels in 1994 and since then it has remained suspended due to necessity of further development of the field. Between 1987 and 1994, a total of 0.56 million of crude oil have been produced. The quality of the Haripur oil is similar to that discovered in Assam.

Limestone: Limestone of Eocene time are exposed on or close to the surface in the Takergaht-Lalghat areas of the north-western part of the Sylhet region along its border with the Indian state of Meghalaya. Reserve is about 30 million tons and it is the second largest discovered limestone in the country after the Jaipurhat. Preliminary reserve estimation was done in the sixties and seventies while the Geological Survey of Bangladesh in 1982 ascertained the reserve by putting 5 depths of about 30 to 100 meters below the surface, the deposit has a thickness of 152 meters and the reserve is estimated to be 17 million tons. In Lalghat and Takerghat areas limestone deposits occur at much shallow depths and their reserve are estimated to be about 10 and 2 million tons respectively. In these areas, limestone deposits are also sporadically exposed. The limestone body has brought to the surface by upliftment due to techtonic activity; most of its parts fall within the Indian Territory and Bangladesh sharply disappear under the alluvium cover in the south with a very high angle of dip. The Takerghat limestone deposit is being extracted since the Independence of Bangladesh and it’s reserve is fast diminishing.

Coal:

Peat, Glass-sand, hard rock Gravel: about 2.5 million tons of peat reserve was discovered in the Maulvibazar area in the early fifties. The deposit occurs 1.5 meter from surface, 1.6 meter thick and extends over an area of about 10 square kilometers. Peat deposits also exist in the Pagla and Chorka areas of the Sunamgonj district, has an estimated reserve of about 3 million tons and at comparable thickness and deposits occur as modern sediments within valleys and floodplains.

Silica/Glass Sand:

Shahzibazar of the Hobigonj district has Glass-sand reserve of about 1.41 million tons which discovered in the early fifties is dominantly composed of silica (over 95%) and occur in centimeter scale lenses that appear within 1-2 meter from the surfacee.

Hard Rock:

Hard-rock gravels of up to 1 meter in diameter are found on the stream beds that drain the hilly areas of Meghalaya and fall on the flat land within Bangladesh territory along the northern parts of the Sylhet region. This is particularly prominent in Jafflong-tamabil areas where total estimated reserve is about 45.6 million cubic meters. Gravels occur both on the present streambeds and up to several meters depth.

Once education in greater Sylhet or Jalalabad was pride for the rest of the nation. No wonder many Sylhetis held important positions across India including Nobodip and Mithila. The 1st Bengali poet Syed Sultan of Sunamgonj earned great respect and reputation at the palace of Arakan Rajshoba. Even when Lord Macaulay instituted his English education in India in 1835, Sylhet did not fall behind. It adapted it quickly. No wonder when the British created Assam Commissariat in 1874 for better management of its administration, they mostly recruited Sylhetis to manage Assam administration. This is mainly owing to superior education and administrative skills and performance tract record of Sylhetis. The same story repeated in 1905 when united Bengal was divided into East and West Bengal. To manage East Bengal’s administration, many Sylhetis were again recruited to do the job as there were not sufficient English educated people in Bengal. However, when owing to political agitation mostly by non-Muslims, the division of Bengal was annulled in 1911.On those days, many Sylhetis had the privilege to govern and administer many districts and offices all across India. Reason; they were better educated and better trained. When Pakistan was created in 1947, a large number of educated officers belonging to Sylhet started managing its administration in almost all areas of administration including civil, military, police, education, taxation, land revenue, and judicial services. In fact, after the creation of East Bengal (later East Pakistan) when 17 new Munshefs (lower court judges) were to be recruited, they did a nation-wide search. After a thorough and intensive selection evaluation, those that were selected as finalists were all from Sylhet. Such was the quality and quantity of educated in Sylhet in those days. There was competition all across Sylhet to excel in education. No wonder the 1st and the 2nd ICS (Indian Civil Service of Indian origin) of India were both from Sylhet. They were none other than Gorushodoy Dutta and Gaznafer Ali Khan of Sylhet----they were the pride of India and of course, Sylhet. When the Calcutta University was established in 1857 with only 8 (eight) students one of those eight was from Sylhet. He was none other than Mohammed Diam of Sylhet town, the 1st graduate of Sylhet in early 1860s. Following him, Maulvi Abdul Karim (known as Danobir Haji Moshin of Sylhet) graduated from Calcutta University in early 1980s. He is the 2nd Muslim graduate of Jalalabad. He was a 'beacon of hope' for the Mohammadan education in Bengal and he played a leadership role in the creation of the All India Muslim League in 1906. When Pakistan's 1st Prime Minister Liaquath Ali Khan was assassinated, Karim's youngest son, Justice A. S. M. Akram was appointed to head its investigation. Current Secretary General Irin Khan's (Amnesty International) Abdul Karim was one of the early medical professionals of Sylhet who performed services with credit in many districts in India. The issue is, on those days many Sylhetis took leadership role across nations mainly due to their superior education, performance tract record and skills. But now-a-days, literacy rate and quality education that were the pride of Sylhet is on a declining trend During partition of India, the literacy rate was highest in Sylhet in East Bengal. Now it is lowest in Bangladesh. For example, it was around 24.4% in Sylhet in 1947 vis-?vis 18.3% in East Bengal or East Pakistan or Bangladesh. As per CIA Factbook, it is 42.3% in Bangladesh now (Bangladesh government claims it to be 62%) and unfortunately, it is only 27.9% in Sylhet, the lowest amongst all divisions. As per Bangladesh government reports, the average literacy rate for Bangladesh is 62% and it is 57.1% in Sylhet, 75.1% in Barisal, 67.9% in Chittagong, 62.6% in Rajshahi and 59.7% in Dhaka divisions. The fact of the matter is, literacy rate is low in Sylhet now and it is increasing at a rate that is not conducive neither for growth, prosperity and more importantly, for competition. In these days of Published by Marupalash, Riyadh SaudiArabia Kingdom of Humanity competition and globalization where knowledge and skills are the engines of growth, competition, innovation, and prosperity, lack of basic education is surely an impediment to growth, prosperity and stability. In this paper, they evaluated the trend of education in Sylhet especially in Secondary and Higher Secondary Board Examinations. We also looked into the number of pupils and the number of educational institutions in Sylhet vis-?vis that of Bangladesh. From their study, they find clear evidence of an alarming trend in the quality and quantity of education in Sylhet. A few causes of such poor trend were mentioned by experts such as foreign remittance, tendency among the young to leave the country, religious backwardness (Sylhet was once a land of religious and spiritual tolerance and openness), shortage of teachers, etc. However, we find difficulty to understand how come female pupils (53.3%) are more than male pupils (46.7%) in Sylhet. Therefore, it need to evaluate the actual causes of such apathy and negligence in the education in Sylhet.

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology or commonly known with its initials SUST, is a state-supported science and technology university located in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Established in 1987, it is the first science and technology university in Bangladesh. It is one of the most popular universities in Bangladesh according to the university started its academic programme from 14 February, 1991 with three departments: physics, chemistry and economics. The campus is located in Kumargaon, approximately five kilometers away from Sylhet.

The university introduced the integrated honours course for the first time in Bangladesh and recently it has introduced the semester system from the 1996-97 session. Every year the existing systems are improving, new departments are going to be opened. According to the master plan for this university ,which states that within a few years Shahjalal University of Science and Technology will be one of the finest institutions of this country.

The first convocation of SUST was held on the 29th April, 1998 and the second convocation of the university was held on the 6th December, 2007.

The university campus is famous for its natural beauty. Many visitors to Sylhet visit the "Shahid Minar" (Martyr's Memorial) of the university. The memorial stands on the top of a small hill and is surrounded by trees. Different cultural organizations arrange programs on the premises, and on local and national occasions.

The first ever Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad was held in Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in 2004.

Students of SUST consistently take a good number of places in the country's national civil service examinations. Many alumni can be found doing graduate studies and researches at renowned universities around the world.

Prominent teachers/lecturers there include the renowned Bangladeshi writer and scientist, Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, who is a professor of Computer Science and Engineering as well as the Head of the dept.

Academics

SUST mainly enrolls undergraduate and graduate students. Students who want to get admission into SUST need to pass the admission test which is highly competitive. Admission test are arranged by the specific schools under the authority of admission council. In recent years, number of applicants for each seat has been stood at 12. SUST also welcomes foreign students. There is a significant number of foreign students especially from Nepal. There are some students in its affiliated medical college from Indian Kashmir.

Classes

SUST has an extensive core curriculum required of all undergraduates. SUST adopted American course credit systems for all departments prior to most of the universities in Bangladesh. The syllabus are always updated frequently to maintain the global standard of education. CSE Society also organizes several workshops for the CSE students of this country.

Research

Some national and international Seminar and conferences on academic matters and scientific researches are held in this university. Recently the international conference on waste water treatment was held in SUST which was hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering and Polymer Science. The university launches "Online Journals" access facility to the teachers recently.

Activities

Side by side with the regular academic affairs, the students participate in different extracurricular activities. The University Student's union and other cultural organizations arrange cultural programmes and competitions. As of now, there are about 29 organization of different types which are registered by the university authority. ShahJalal University of Science & Technology Debating Club(SUST Debating Club /SDC) is one of the prominent debating clubs of Sylhet as well as Bangladesh.SDC is the first club of SUST which was established in 1992.SUST Debating Club usually arranges the inter-department debate competition, the winners of which again take part in the national and inter-university debate competition. SUST Debating Club arranges workshop on debate , weekly study circle etc. The Photographers Association and the Film Societies hold photo exhibitions and film shows. Other organizations like the Science Club, Rovar-scout Club etc. are visible on the campus with their sociocultural activities throughout the year. SUST has many recognized clubs and organizations which are mainly operated by students and teachers always appreciate and help the students. There also some rock band groups in SUST."RIM" is one of them."RIM" organize musical concert in SUST campus frequently."NONGAR" is another rock band group. Members of "NONGAR" proud to introduce them as Nongarian.

There is a cultural club named "SHIKORH" which is the first and most popular organization in SUST. "SHIKORH" deals with the bengali culture in the university. It has ofur departments. Music, Drama, Art, Literature. "SHIKORH" is the most performed organization in SUST. All the national programmes are organized by "SHIKORH" along with other organizations. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal is the Chief Advisor of "SHIKORH".

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has also a newspaper, named Protiddhoni which represents the on campus activities, also covers lifestyle ,entertainment, career etc .First edition has been launched very successfully.

There is a very famous literary organization named "OHONA PORSHAD" founded by T. M. Ahmed Kaysar and *Mohammed Nurul Alam* two student from SUST. "OHONA PORSHAD" organized a number of folk festival called Louko Mela. They also invited the living mith of Bangla folk singer Shah Abdul Karim. They honored him for his contribution in Bangla Songs and culture.

Another renowned organization of the university is Theatre SUST, which is the first group theater of the University. Theatre SUST established in 7th December 1997. Till today the group has launched approximately 11 productions.

Another renowned organization of the university is SUST OSN, to support the free and open source software to the university students. It is taking a part to help the students in learning and using open source software and tools. It has opened a door to the students. Now they can realize that software can be developed or customized to use as they need.

Sports

The students of this university also participate in various sports for recreation and the finest athletes regularly compete in inter-university games like football, handball, volleyball, basketball etc. SUST also have some varsity teams. There is a well equipped gymnasium adjacent to the university student health center. Students organize both inter-department and inter-university tournaments for popular games every year. There is a special club named "SPORTS SUST" for that, which is operating by the student body. Girls and teachers also participate in several games.

Future Plans

For the culture and practice of free and innovative thinking and for mixing and exchanging of views among the teachers and students, the university is building a modern Teachers and Students Centre (TSC). Other projects include construction of an auditorium, seven residential halls for the boys and three residential halls for the girls, a stadium, a sports complex with swimming pool, a gymnasium, a clinic with all modern facilities, and a school and a college for the children of the faculty members and other supporting staff. A multipurpose shopping mall with modern facilities will also be built to meet the demand of the teachers, students and staff.

M.A.G. Osmani Medical College:

Modern medicine was introduced to the community by the establishment of an institutional hospital in the heart of the city in 1936 which was later upgraded to cater for the British and allied troops of Burma front in World War II. In the year 1948, the hospital was further upgraded and extended to convert it into a medical school with appropriate teaching staff and residential accommodations in order to produce Licentiate of Medical Faculty (LMF) doctors.

Later on the Govt. decided to start a five years course leasing to MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery) degree and as such in 1962, the Sylhet Medical College come into being. The bed strength was increased to 300, The college was initially start with 27 student and was affiliated to the faculty of Medicine of Dhaka University, with the upgrading of the medical school into a medical college, the need for a larger space for housing the various departments as well as a quieter and congenial surrounding became obvious. As a result of which the present location in the western sector of the town was selected for the purpose, where the collage was finally shifted in 1969 and the bad strength was increased to 500. Since then the college has been continuing its steady progress. The number of admitted students is now 150 per year, which is the same in all the medical collage in Bangladesh. Hospital for tuberculosis and chest diseases founded in 1953, Leprosy hospital in 1962, Infectious diseases hospital in1982, are all affiliated to the college. A Nuclear Medical Center was also established within the campus in 1981. Since the liberation in 1971 there has been steady progress in many sector like accommodation of female students, establishment of coronary care unit, endoscopy unit, diarrhoeal disorder cell, establishment of department of microbiology, department of biochemistry and the department of radiotherapy. Recently department of paediatric surgery, neuro surgery and neuro medicine have also been started in the collage. Post graduate courses of various disciplines have been started in this college since 1999.

In the year 1986, the college was renamed "Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College" after late General MAG Osmani, the liberation war hero.
Since then the college has made steady forward and in time it was realized that the college was ready for greater honors for what it and already achieved during the years since its inception and particularly in view of the fact that the college used to be recognized by the GMC until its deracination in 1972 together with other medical college in the sub-continent. In January 1993 the collage was recognized by the General Medical council of U.K. for unlimited period. We believe our students will continue to work as hard as ever to uphold this unique honor bestowed on us to enhance the prestige of this institution even further.

Murari Chand College: usually referred as M C College, was the first college of Sylhet. It was established in 1892.Since then it has been playing important role in the educational, cultural, political sphere of greater Sylhet.

History

M C College was established in 1892 by a local noble person called Raja Girish Chandra Roy. The college was named after his maternal grandfather Murari Chand. It was located beside the present Raja G C School. At the beginning it was a proprietary college. Raja himself used to fund the expenses of the college. From 1892 to 1908 (16 years) until the death of the Raja it remained proprietary. But in 1908 right after the death of the Raja the college had to apply for government help. Then it become an 'aided' college. For four years it remained 'aided'. In 1912 the college become fully government administered and was considered as an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta. In 1925 the college moved to its current campus at Thackarey Hills (now Tilagarh). In 1942 the Golden Jubilee of the college was observed by the publishing of the Murari Chand College Golden Jubilee Volume.

Infrastructure

Academic Buildings

Presently there are nine academic buildings in the college. They are consist of classrooms, library, department offices etc. and mainly used to conduct classes. Almost all of the departments have their own academic buildings except a few.

Library

The central library of the college is one of the oldest libraries in the region. It houses a huge number of volumes many of them are rare. The library is widely used by researchers.

Hostel

There are two individual hostels for boys and girls, which provide accommodation for the students from distant places. The boys hostel consists of six blocks.

Cultural Activities

Every year M C College organizes the celebration of Pahela Baishakh (Bangla New Year). People of all class and profession take part in the procession which makes it one of the most colorful event of the day.

Sylheti Dialect

The Sylheti language is spoken throughout Sylhet Division, with some minor dialectal variations. Sylheti is an Eastern Indic language closely related to Bengali (Bangla), Chittagonian and languages. Most Sylhetis are at least bilingual to some degree, as they are taught Bengali at all levels of education in Bangladesh. Sylheti is also the dominant dialect of Bengali among the inhabitants of the Barak Valley in India, centered around Cachar district in Assam. The largest Sylheti-dominated city in India is Silchar, with significant Sylheti-speaking populations in Agartala, Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Shillong and Kolkata. Sylhet is the home of most Bangladeshi migrants to the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. Certain parts of the United Kingdom are heavily populated with people from Sylhet, most notably the East End of London, especially the boroughs of Newham and Tower Hamlets, which includes Brick Lane, a famous street dubbed "Banglatown" for its large Bangladeshi, almost entirely Sylheti, population. Another area where Sylhetis have remained as a large group abroad is New York City in the United States. Although there are many of them living in Manhattan and Brooklyn, Sylhetis are mostly found in the borough of Queens. Most of them live in areas like Astoria, Long Island City, and Jackson Heights. Hillside Avenue in Jamaica, Queens has seen a tremendous amount of newly opened Bangladeshi restaurants mainly by Sylhetis and a great influx of such residents attracted by the real estate boom there.

Given its unique cultural and economic development, and linguistic differences (Greater Sylhet region was a part of Assam and Surma Valley State for much of the British Raj in comparison to the rest of Bangladesh), and given that Sylhet has, for most of its recent history, been a region of a larger entity (i.e., Assam, Bengal, Bangladesh), Sylhetis have a strong attachment to their regional and religious identity.

Many Sylheti regard themselves as fiercely proud of their own language, family-orientated community culture and conservative practice of Islam, but it must be remembered that not all Sylhetis are Muslim. Indian Sylheti are either Hindu or Christian. Hasan Raja , a Sylhetis cultural icon, was depicted in a film as a lecherous fellow who forsakes his family and uses obscene language. Enraged Sylhetis took the makers of the film to court. Adding insult to injury, the film was also shot in Bengali rather than Hason Raja's native Sylheti language. Although Hason Raja was a practicing Muslim, he is revered even by Hindu and Christian Sylhetis.

Sylhetis attachment to their regional identity also continues in the efforts of many Sylhetis to keep marital relationships within the same regional cultural background.

Folk Music in Sylhet

Sylhet Geetika

Sylhet developed over the centuries a rich distinctive culture of its own. In the present article we would like to discuss an important component of the folk literature of Sylhet, i.e . the Sylhet Geetika or Sylhet Ballads.

A Ballad is s short narrative poem usually depicting a dramatic event. It was originally used to be sung, passed along orally and changed greatly in transmission so much so that in the process the names of the original composers were lost. As a result, it becomes an integral part of the common cultural heritage of a people. A ballad may be historical, romantic, supranational, nautical or heroic depending on its content but it must have a story revolving around a number of characters and their activities. Although the melody of a ballad is generally found to be monotonous, its language as the suitable medium of human emotion and desires, acquires a depth and vitality of its own. Being a story-based, narrative medium, it used the lyrical form of presentation for heightened effect and attempts, by stages to bring the story (and the audience) to the climax. In this way the singer himself a product of the particular local socio-cultural milieu, spontaneously becomes one of the audience. Commenting on this point, Albert B. Lord says, "In a real sense the young singer recapitulates the experiences of the generations before him starching back the distant past. From meter and music he absorbed in his earliest years the length of phrase, the partial cadences the full stops.

As for the singer's artistic manner of presentation Albert B. Friedman says, "The Ballad method of narration is unique and until one gets used to it, it can be disconcerting. Characteristically a Ballad breaks into its story at a moment when the train of action is decisively pointed towards the catastrophe. Setting time the appearance of the persons involved the background are indicated by a few light stroke or a few casual hints. Characters prop up out nowhere just at the moment they are needed and are dropped with equal sadness"

Although narrative is one of the principal elements in a Ballad, nevertheless, it is not its sole characteristic feature. Technique is also of no less importance in a Ballad. Professor Gummere elaborates this point, "Despite its; rank as necessary condition, narrative is not a fixed fundamental primary fact in the Ballad scheme. The greatest Ballads affect us no by the story itself but by the way in which the story is told; and this way is not narrative art at high pitch."

Similarly the dramatic quality of a Ballad contributes not a little, to it's overall success. "The Ballad tells a story. But of the elements that go to make up a story action, characters setting and then the Ballad is mainly concerned with action. Characterization is conventional and general; setting is likewise general and static theme is implied. But the action is always vivid and dramatic and often romantic as well often it is sensationalized into the melodramatic."

Though of ancient origin Bangla Ballades began to come into their own during the middle age. In this context, the arrival of Islam had a role to play. The distinguished folklore scholar Ashutsh Bhattacharya explains that there is a gulf of novels and folk literature; class divisions had much to do with it. While novels in ancient India remained the preserve of the privileged educated classes, medieval India witnessed under the influence of the more egalitarian Islamic ideals, novels emerging out the class and caste based social barred to a greater extent than was hitherto possible. Indian Ballads also benefited from this favorable winds of change made possible by the advent of Islam. In the localities and regions where Islamic influence were strong Ballads found congenial fertile ground to strike deep roots among the lower orders. Bhattacharya could see a close connection between the geographical spread of Islam and the development of the Bangla. Sylhet Ballads may be said to be a direct product of the impact of Islam on the culture traditions. Large numbers Ballads were known to have existed al over Sylhet but most of which had been lost for over. Prominent among these are Tilairaja, Kaldulai, monibibi, Rangamala, Chhuratjan Bibi, Alifjan Sundari, Sonamati Kanya, Jamir Saudagor and Panch Hatno.

History of Sylhet

Sylhet was not a place of first preference for settlement, wedged between Assam and Tripura and with their hills and forests on all three sides, north, east and south and vast water-bodies in the basin impeding movement. The basin, known as Sylhet basin- one of the three geographically distinguishable sub-regions of the vast Bengal delta-the deltaic plain and the Tippera surface being the other two, has its own features. Much of Sylhet, most prominently the central area, forms a saucer-shaped basin. This Sylhet basin can be distinguished from the rest of the recent alluvaium by its subsidence and the profound effect this has had upon the drainage pattern, the sinking of this large area into its present saucer-shape seems to be intimately connected with the rise of the Madhpur Tract. This long basin is also known as the Haor basin because it is a succession of large lake-like water bodies of various sizes known as Haors. It has been held that Hsuan Tsang while giving his account of Samatara makes a reference to Sylhet which he describes as being on the borders of an ocean. Since there cannot be any real ocean in the geographical location of Sylhet in the 7th century A. D. when Hsuan Tsang travelled, it can be taken that he relied on his informers - it appears from the context that the pilgrim never really visited Sylhet – who had reported to him about these endless expanses of joined – together haors. We may recall the usal explanation that the word haor is probably derived from the word Sagara or Sayara i.e. sea or lake. But we have doubts if Hsuan Tsang really meant Sylhet by the word that he used in Chinese transformation i.e. Shi-li-Ch’a-ta-lo. In describing the location of Shi-li-Ch’a-ta-lo Hsuan Tsang says according to Beal’s translation. “Going north-east from this (i.e. Samatata) to the borders of the ocean, we come to the kingdom of Shi-li-Ch’a-ta-lo. It was Vivien de Saint-Martin who first equated Shi-li-Ch’a-ta-lo with Srihatta i.e. Sylhet and it received added respectability when Cunningham accepted it. Historians have accepted the identification since. However, if probably looked at Hsund Tsang’s statement has contradictions in it which was in fact pointed out by his translator Beal, although ignored by other including Chnningham. What has been ignored so far is that “North-east towards Sylhet does not lead to the borders of the ocean” (Beal, 407 f.n.). Shi-li-Ch’a-ti-lo – does it os obviously stand for Srihatta? It was not so obvious to Beal either who would rather identify it with the Burmese kingdom named Srikshetra. Hsuan Tsang describes it as “Kingdom of Shi-li-Ch’a-ti-lo. Form the political history of Bangladesh what we have so far recovered it is extremely unlikely that in the middle of the seventh century when Hsuan Tsang visited Bangladesh there was a Srihatta kingdom. The first srihatta kingdom Srihattarajya that we know of belongs to the 12th/13th century as we will see below. Our position in this arctcle is as will be seen further down, that in the 7th century parts of Sylhet were rathe under the kingdom of Kamarupa-Pragjyotisha. It not an alternative suggesting possible? Shilichatalo sounds more like Sri-chattala (i.e. Chittagong) than Srihatta. And that would be on the “borders of the ocean” but Chittagong or Srikshetra – that would be south-east of Samatata, not “north-east’ as given by Hsun Tsang. Perhaps Hsuan Tsang committed an error here. Suniti Kumar Chatterji speak of “the five Bengals” during the 600-100 A. D. period and defines it as “Radha, Varendra, Vanga, Chattala and Samatata,” on what authority however we do not know. The contries beyond Si-li-Ch’a-ti-lo that have been mentioned by Hsuan Tsang are all South-East Asian - which is also an indicator. Robert Lindsay, the Resident of Sylhet in the 2nd quarter of the eighteenth century leaves a graphic account of his journey from Dhaka to Sylhet and describes how he encountered so vast an expanse of water that he had to use a compass of finding his direction. Even in the ancient inscriptions of Sylhet there are clear references to the existence of large water bodies, giving an overall impression of a land with much watery areas around-unlike the inscriptions from the many other settled areas of Bengal. These watery feature are particularly mentioned in demarcating the situation of the lands granted in ancient Sylhet, particularly noticeable in the Paschimbhag Copper Plate of Srichandra. In the very first lines of its grants portion it states: “in the matter of Garala vishaya, Pogravishaya and Chandrapuravishaya with the group of atoll like forms of lands formed out of unfathomable waters moveover inclusinv of marshy lands surrounding them belonging to Shrihattmandala”. Moreover, the Paschimbhag Copper Plate refers to a large naval establishment, a Naubandha (ship anchorage) i. e. the Indresvara Naubandha. The place survives till today as Indesvara in the Maulvibazar district only a few miles from Pachimbhag, the find-place of the copper plate. The Naubandha according the inscription extended over an area comprising 52 patakas of land. Raja Kesavadeva and Isanadeva, local potentates of the 12th /13th centuries felt it important to have innumerable war-boats (nauvatakas) according to their Bhatera Copper Plates. So much naval activity in the land presupposes extensive watery areas. Indeed that these joined-together waster bodies used to gave the impression of a sea (Sagar) we find again in L 38 in the Bhatera CP No.1 which makes mention of Sagar as the boundary of the land granted.

The 5,000 sq. mile basin in demarcated by the Shillong plateau in the north, the Burmese and Tripura high-lands on the east and an upthrust of Pleistocene alluvium called Madhupur jangle on the south and the Brahmaputra river might have been the western border in ancient times. Besides there sea like watery areas, entire Sylhet, expecting its western side, is surrounded by hilly areas.

Protected by these natural barriers the Sylhet region remained isolated in ancient times. The gradual aryansiation of Bengal that had been going on ever since around the sixth century B.C and then through the Mauryan times, first Gauda and Pundravardhana (northern region), and then Vanga and Samatatra (eastern region) apparently did not reach the uninviting area to the north-east of Samatata that lay beyond the forest region and covered by much water.

Even the powerful Guptan thrust under Samudragupta (c. 330-380 AD) that reached as far east as the borders of Samatata stopped there and did not reach out into thes externmost regions i.e. the region known as Sylhet. Even in the Muslim times it was one houndred years after Bakhtyer that Sylhet fell to the Turki outsiders (1303 A.D.) with the coming of the might of Shamsuddin Firoz Shah and the light of Shah Jalal. When I the early part of the 6th century A. D. The Guptas extended their sway over Samatata under. Vainyagupta they did not apparently show any desire of expanding into the Sylhet region the usual early historical diagnostic cultural materials – NBP were punch-marked coins and Sunga terracotta and pottery – that indicate early historic occupation and settlement are noticeably absent in Sylhet. Even Guptan relics such as sculptures, coins and inscriptions are also absent. It can be easily concluded that Brahmanical cultural and life-pattern was very late in arriving in Sylhet. No proven early historic settlement site is known. The scarce number of sculptures both Hindu and Buddhist recovered form Sylhet compared to the other areas of Bangladesh is indeed most significant. Similarly sculptures are rare from the contiguous area of Mymensingh and rather few in number from Chittagong. Form K.K. Gupta the historian of Sylhet we come to know about the stone Vasudeva images from Sylhet which he merely describes as “ancient”. He writes: “In the district of Sylhet there are three ancient stone images of Vasudeva worshipped in three different places. The first one was discovered in the Rajaramardighi in Amberkhana mahalla just north of north of the present municipal area of Sylhet town. This beautiful stone image is now enshrined in the temple of Narasimhajiu of Kalighat, Sylhet town. The second one is worshipped in Jagannathpur in Sunamgonj sub-division. The third one is the famous Vasudeva of Panchakhanda – there is a local tradition that this was discovered when the silted tank of Durga Dalai in Supatala village was excavated”. Gupta has not provided any photographs of them nor has he given any description. Thus it is not possible to suggest any date for them. However, as regares the third image, Supatala being contiguous to the village of Nidhanpur, the find-spot of the Pragiyotisha king Bhaskaravarman’s copper plates and the image according to Gupta being “very old” he suggests that this image may belong to the time of Bhaskaravarman (7th century A.D.) and may even, by implication, perhaps to the time of Mahabhutivarman (6th century A. D) the Pragjyotisha king (also known as Bhutivarmma). “So it is not unlikely that the forefathers of the Brahmanas mentioned in Nidhanpur Copper plates of Bhaskaravarman were settled in the district of Sylhet, in Panchakhanda area in connection with the Bali-Charu-Satra of god Vasudeva and also in connection with other institutions, educational or charitable, connected with such a big establishment”. However this dating of the imapg is highly unlikely. Achuyta Charan Chaoudhury also refers to this Supatala Vasudeva and also gives a photograph of the image. However, it is clothed and the photograph is so unclear that it is of no use either for describing it or for dating. Choudhury also refers to the Jagannathpur Vasudeva which according to him is exactly similar to the supatala one. He dates it to the 12th century A.D. but for what reason is not clear. Of the 851 Vishnu image in the Bangladesh National Museum only two are from Sylhet. Of the two No 108 is simply mentioned as being from Sylhet and the no 15: wbe as from Hobigonj. Hunitngton knows no Vishnu image form Sylhet-Vasudeva or otherwise. The bronze Lokanatha – (2’-8’’ × 5’11’’) from Bandarbazar, Sylhet – which is also in the custody of the Bangladesh Notional Museum, however exception as it is well documented and has been studied by experts. However, the suggested for it by them range from 8th - 9th century A. D. to 10th – 11th century A.D. R. D Bangrji dated it to 10 the century A. D. However , Bhattasali assigns it to an early date, 8th – 9th century A. D. on the ground of the style of the script in the seals attached to the back of the image and also the image appeared to him to be “very old”. Alam and Huntington support its 9th century date and Asher also asserts “this Lokanatha is much earlier” while contradicting Banerji’s 10th century dating. However Nihar Ranjan Roy on statistic grounds favored this later date of 10th century.

But he successively advanced the dating father to “second half of 10th century” and in 1993 to 10th -11th century wqon stylist grounds. On the basis of evidence that we have so far, the position that has been taken in this paper is that Sylhet region had been under Kamarupa-Pragjyotisha from the time of Bhutivarmma (below) until its passing under the domain of the famous Vanga-Samatara king Srichandra as a result of his successful invasion of the territory of the Assam king in the very first years of his accession to the throne ( C. 925 A.D.) as evidenced in his Pashimbhag inscription which was issued in his 5th regional year i.e. about 930 A. D. Kamarupa-Pragjyotisha regime throughout had been Hindu and Buddhist images are rare in Assam. On this ground we are included to believe it extremely unlikely that Buddhist bronze image like that of Lokanatha would be cast while the Assamese dominion lasted in Sylhet. Technologically also Huntington remarks, “it is one of the largest of the early metal pieces form Bengal and thus must have been the product of a fairly well-established metal working tradition. She would rather ascribe its origin to the Lalmai-Mainamati region particularly as “it shares a number of features apparently characteristics of the area. Asher although supporting an early date also relates it to the bronze image of Samatara, particularly the bronzes of Mainamati. So we are of the opinion that this bronze image is more probably to connected to the Vanga-Samatata tradition of art and that tradition we assert was introduced to Sylhet after it came under the Buddhist Cahndras in the second quarter of the 10th century A.D. the 10th – 11th century A.D. date for the image suggested on grounds of style can be asserted on political grounds also. For its 8th- 9th century dating the necessary political and cultural context is missing. Further, seals are attached to the back of this image which again is a Chandra-Mainamati Characteristic.

The scarcity of image in Sylhet can only indicate that wealthy patrons were not forthcoming in large numbers unlike Pundravaradhana or Vanga or Samatata, which is turn indicates very little urbanization. Indeed any major archaeological site – as already pointed out is known in Sylhet region.

However, as we will see below attempts of colonization were going on form Bhutivarmma (6the century A. D.) till as late even as the 12th/13th century A.D Apparently these were planned attempts of colonization – the priestly class being settled presumably among a tribal people- and of creating a Brahmaputra (i. e. abode of Brahamans), the tern used in the Paschimbhag grant for the spread of a particular belief system and a way of life, i. e. Brahmanism, under the patronage of the ruling power and also for the purpose that more and more land could be brought under cultivation and the natural resources could be exploited.

Because of its comparatively more natural advantages Sylhet, south of the Surma and the Kushiyara rivers was thus the nuclear area basing which much political and colonial activities were carried out over the centuries. It would seem that Bhutivarmma’s colony of 300 Barhmans did not expand and flourish in any remarkable way so that Srichandra had to make another massive attempt by patronizing the influx of another six thousand Brahmanas and mindful of the prevailing Hindu culture of the area he, a Buddhist king established a Hindu matha dedicated to Brahmanical gods. Indeed the most important aspect of these Sylhet inscriptions – beginning from Bhutivarmma’s ghost inscription, Bhaskara’s Nidhanpur inscription through Srichandra’s (Paschimbhag) to Kesavadeva’s (Bhatera) ,, as already pointed out is that they give us a continuous history of settlement in Sylhet region of very large number of Brahmana, for long six to seven hundred years from the 6th to 12th/13th centuries A. D. – under royal patronage. Settling Brahmanas through the greant of Agrahara village was an ancient practices. There is a tradition among the Brahmanas of Sylhet that their ancestors were immigrants from Mithila i.e North Bihar. K. K. Gupta along with Achyuta Charan Choudhury points out the vey strong influence of the Maithili tradition on the Hindus of Sylhet. Gupta also finds some indication of migration and settlement in Sylhet of Nagara Brahmans (or Latadvijas ) of Gujrat area. Latadvijas used to be brought into Bengal for service at temples – the Khalimpur Copper plate of Dharmapala mentions with pride the engagement of Latadvijas for service at the temple of Nanna – Narayana.

In 380 A.D. The western boundary of Kamarupa was traditionally the river Karatoya (Kalika Purana c. 12th-13th centuries A. D.) and on its eastern frontier was situated Davaka which has been identified with modern Daboka on the Yamuna rive n the Nowgong district of Assam. The short rock inscription found among the extensive ruins of Daboka of the illustrious Maharajadhiraja Bhutivarmadeva the devout worshipper of Lord Vishnu" and dated either in 234 or 244 G.E (553-54 A.D. or 563-64 A.D) The inscription descries him as the "performer of the Asvamedha sacrifice" and the inscription marked " the religious retreat (Asramam) of this minister of state (Vishayamatya) [Aryya] guna (or Adyaguna) this indicates Bhutiverma's conquest of the Davaka country. It is reasonable to believe that Bhutivarman felt himself worthy of performing hours sacrifice after the conquest of the Surma and the Kushiara valleys (i.e Sylhet) and Davaka. By the second half of the sixth century A.D. his probable region period being C. 540-570 A. D. Mahabhutivarmma was the Maharajadhiraja ruling over an extensive kingdom form the Karatoya on the west to the Chinese Borders on the east and south of Sylhet to the south. Bhutivarman's expansion into Sylhet perhaps had been at the cost of Samatata and if not then it was a case of forst occupation of an unclaimed land, Hsuan Tsang very correctly descried Samatata being to the south of Kamarupa but where was the frontier between the two kingdoms? Hsuan Tsand gives the area of Samatata as being 3,00 li, equivalent to about 600 miles in circuit on the basis of which Bhattasali calculates and concludes that for Samatata to have such a vast area it must have included the regions of Mymensingh and Dhaka to the east of the Brahmaputra and also entire Sylhet. However Hsun Tsand obviously has erred here and following him Bhattasali, as we know that when Hsuan Tsang was visiting Samata and Kamarupa - the Sylhet region and necessarily also eastern parts of Mymensingh,where still under Kamarupa - as Hsuan Tsang's contemporary Bhaskaravarman's re-confirmation of Bhautiverman's land - grants prove and indeed the status quo perhaps remained until the region cme under the rule of Srichandra, as a result of his raid into the Kamarupa country probably taking advantage of the unsettled contition there after the end of the rule of Balavarman III of the Salastambah dynasty in c. 910 A.D. However, the sovereignty of Kamarupa proper remained unaffected by the raid. The Pascimbhag grant of Srichandra is among the most important ones in the whole range of Bengal epigraphs. Apart from its many other features giving it distinction, this charter establishing a great Hindu Matha and named as the chandrapurasasana i.e "Chandrapura Charter" in the inscription itself is the largest endowment of land in spite of the fact that some very big endowments are known in south India. This gave away land in widely scattered areas of the whole southern Sylhet and parts of eastern Sylhet as well and total area of land gifted away, according to K. K. Gupta's calculation is not less than 1,00 sq miles. The land was given "free from all dues with all income such as taxes and tributes of gold enjoyed by the king, in the name of the lord Buddhabhattaraka and for the increase of merit and fame of my ( i.e. Srichandra) parents and myself" (Ll. 47-56 of the inscription).

Therefore although he was donating land for a grand Hindu religious establishment Srichandra was doing it for pleasing the lord Buddha. There were four kinds of endowment as categorized in the inscription : first and foremost the donation of land for his grand design of creating a Brahmapura. It was named Brahmapura because it was dedicated to Brahman. Additionally the capital city of Brahman according to Hindu mythology is also known as Brahmapura. Moreover , Srichandra intended it to be an abode of Brahmanas thousands of them and hence it was a Brahmapura. Srichandra also put to the best use the similarity between his name and the name of his newly acquired Vishaya i. e. Chandrapura. Now, was Srichandra making some experiment with the meeting of faiths? Are we face to face here with some incipient syncretism the trend of which of which perhaps can also be seen in the inclinations of Ladahachandra who dedicated a temple to Ladahamadhava (Vishnu) and Govindachandra who donated land to Natesvarabhattaraka (Siva). Govindachandra is sometimes identificated with Gopihandra of the queen Mainamati-Gopihandra legend of the Nathapanthi tradition. This developing trend was soon submerged under the high tides of resurgent Hinduism at the time of the Senas. However this maverich religious trend survived in the rise, later of many unorthodox cults at the popular level. The Paschimbhag inscription also give s in interesting glimpse of how elaborately these mathas used to be organized and the picture of the way these were maintained and run. Most interestingly, this give us by analogy an insight into the organization and administration of such ruined monasteries as Paharpur and Mainamati about which every little is known. The establishment at the main Chandrapura matha consisted of one professor (upadhyaya) whose main duty to explain Chandra works - and ten students. And there was provision for extending hospitality to five guest Brahmanas apurva-brahamanas. It is also interesting that the mathas were provided with means to make them self-sufficient for all their needs as regards maintenance and performance of daily worship.

The mighty Vijayasena who form his base in western and northern Bengal is known t have conquered the Vanga-Samatata region as evidenced by the Barackpore plate and established and all-Bengal power for the first time in pre-Muslim period apparently left Sylhet region unmolested. For, more or less contemporaneously with the Senas, we come across the existence of a line of independent Hindu kings, Kshatriyas of the lunar race of whom two copper plate inscription of two kings Kesavadeva and Isanadeva have been found (in 1872 in village of Bhatera about 20 miles south of Sylhet town) and whose line is also partially known form a local traditional history. Contained in the manuscript Hattanathera Pachali. They were independent and ruled in their own right in what they call in their inscription as "Srihattarajya". In their inscs they do not recognize the Senas or any other as their overlords and also for the first time their "Srihattarajya" which comprised move or less lands more anciently forming the Chandrapurivishya (plus Pogara and Garalavishayas) is no longer Srihattarajya, just an administrative segment of a greater administrative unit i.e. Pundaravandhanabhukti but a rajua aknogdom in its own right. It has also been suggested that the later Deva kings Damodaradeva, Dasarathadeva, Viradharadeva who in the late 13th century taking advantage of the weakness of the Senas set up an independent kingdom in Samatata and later even in the citadel of the Senas Viramapura itself may have been linked in some way with these Sylhet Devas. The two Bhatera Copper Plates thus have the unique distinction of being inscriptions of an independent local kingdom of Sylhet and a Hindu dynasty. The two Copper plates trace their history through the reigns of five/six kings ruling gin south and central and eastern Sylhet including. It seems the region of present Sylhet town. The first plate (i.e. of Kesavadeva) traces the genealogy of the dynasty form Navagirvvana, followed by his son whose name has been variously read as Gokuladeva, Kongana and Gokvana etc. the traditional history Hattanathera Pachli however gives the name as Gokula. He was followed by his son Narayana and Narayana's son was Kesavadeva alias the "Ripuraja-Gopi-Govinda" (Bhatera Copper Plates nos 1 &2, no 2 i.e Isanadeva) shortened as Govindakesava. The Bhatera plate No.2 was issued by Raja Isanadeva, the third son of Kesavadeva, who was provably reigning only as a Regent during the minority of his second brother's son. It seems he was preceded by his eldest brother who was infirm and sonless. The Bhatera plate no. 2 was issued in the 17th year of Isanadeva reign. Isanadeva's plate traces the genealogy form Gokula/Gonguna - Navagirvvana being omitted. This perhaps indicates that Navagirvvana's reign was not of much consequence and the greatness of the dynasty began with the second king. The Hattanathera Pachali gives the genealogy of these Srihatta Kings form navagirvvana to Govindakesava i.e. four generations and this segment of the Pachili genealogy is common with the Bhatera plate genealogies. The occurrence of these inscriptionally attested historical personas lends some credence to the accounts of Sylhet dynasties as given in the Hattanathera Pachali, The Pachali also descirbes this line of kings as being Kshatriyas of the lunar race. It however traces their line form times much earlier3than that of the Bhatera inscriptions and then takes it down to a much later period - right down to a Gauda- Govinda who must be the same as Gaud - Govinda who went down to Bengal Sultan Shamsuddin Firuz Shah's onslaughts in 1303 A.D.

Thus the terminal king of the dynasty as mentioned in the Hattanathera Pachali is also a known historical personage. From the ancestors of Navagirvvana to Gaud-Govinda the last king we have to accommodate a large number of kings of this line and its branches and for this we have to have a time frame of say more than a century. The summary of their history from Hattanathera Pachali as gathered by K. k. Guptaalong as follows:

1. Kahnda Kamarupa ("portion of Kamarupa", i.e. Sylhet) was divided into three parts amongst the three brothers Ladduka, Gudaaka and Jayantaka who were children of Gunhaka and the divided kingdoms were known after their names as Lauda, Ganda and Jayantia respectively. The old capital fell to the share of the second brother Gudaka and was known as Gauda or Pata-Gauda i. e. "Gauda Capital" (probably near present Sylhet town). The long line of descendants of Gudaka as given in the Hattanathera Pachali include the names of the kings that we get from the Bhatera plate No. 1, although the name of Raja Isana of the second plate does not occur. However, It is clear that in the Bhatera plates we are dealing with these Gauda kings.

2. According to Gupta's reconstruction, at one stage Gauda was divided into two separate kingdoms viz. South Gauda and north Gauda amongst the two step brothers, Bramajit and Dharmadhvaja, respectively. According to Gupta this happened probably during the last part of the 12th century A.D.

3. The south and north Gauda again became an amalgamated kingdom under Govinda, the prince of the south Gauda branch (senior branch) and was popularly known as Gauda-Govinda (also Garuda0Govinda, Gad-Govinda etc.) Govinda's minor cousin Garuda of the north or Pata-Gauda branch (junior branch) was the crown prince. However we know from authentic history that Gauda-Govinda was the last king.

What is interesting is that the present Greater Sylhet region, as we have seen above is known to the Hattanathera Pachali is as "Khanda-Kamarupa" a "portion of Kamarupa and the three portion in which it was divided i. e Lauda or north, north-western Sylhet (later Laud, a paragon in Sunamgonj) Jaintia i. e. north, north-eartern Sylhet, president Jaintia region and Gauda i.e. central, eastern and southern Sylhet or what we historically know as Srihattamandala in which was situated Chandrapurivishya (plus Pogara and Garala Vishayas). These three parts together made up "Khanda-Kamarupa)" part-Assam" i.e. what is now Sylhet. If this traditional history is any worth then it is to be assumed that it is only by the time when these three kingdoms were created-sometime perhaps in the last quarter of the eleventh century - that the northern parts, north of Sylhet town, apparently had become habitable and came into the light of history. All Sylhet history prior to that evolved as we have seen round the colonizing efforts of successive dynasties of settling Brahmanas in the southern and eastern regions. The original settled area was the historical Srihattamandala and Chadrapurivishaya.

When did these independent Bhatera plates kings rule? This long line of kingdom of Hattanathera Pachali including those covered by the Bhatera plates is to be accommodated between the middle of the eleventh century and the end of the thirteenth century 1303 A. D. as we have seen, being he terminal date. The Chandras who possessed Srihattamandala by virtue of conquering it form Assam, ruled it till the middle of the 11th century_Govindachandra, the last of the lines rule having ended in c. 1050 A. D. this circumstance must have contributed to the emergence of the independent kingdoms in Sylhet, particularly the line of the Bhatera kings. They took advantage of the state of flux created after the disintegration of Chandra power. They maintained their independence under the successor states of the Varmans and the Senas.

The Bhatera plate of Isana give only the regional year (year 17) for the date of issue of the grant . the plate No. 1 gives the date in an era the reading and interpretation of which has not been agreed upon among scholars. So we are left to rely on the paleography of the two inscriptions and here opinions of scholars range from the eleventh century to thirteenth century. The original editor of the plate Rajendrala Mitra read the date as the equivalent of 1049 A. D. R.C. Majumdar argues on paleographic grounds that the date of 1245 is more portable. Nihar Ranjan Roy however favors the eleventh century. Barrie Morrison trusts Majumdar's judgement and follow thirteenth century date, the eleventh century dating however, is not very sound since some of the characters very nearly resemble developed Bangla script. The date is most likely to be rather later. There are internal evidences in the text-some Bangla words even some words which may be recognized as the earliest form of words used in Sylhetee dialect - names of a large number of villages that have survived in slightly altered forms - that indicate a date that should not be very remote. We have the definite terminal date, 1303 A. D. for Gaud-Govinda and the beginning should be logically sometime after C. 1050 A. D. Thus these Bhatera plates kings perhaps can be placed between the middle of the 12 century A. D. and the middle of the 13th century. The Guhaha line of kings and the Bhatera plates kings between them till 1303 A. D. could cover more than 150 years.

The Bhatera plates emphasize the continuous Hindu tradition of Sylhet in ancient and early medival times. Raja Kesavadeva the Srihattanatha, the ruler of Srihattarajya, the "crest-jewel of the kings of Eastern countries" has also been described in this own copper plate and also in Isanadeva's as Ripuraja-Gopi-Govinda a Vaishnavite title. But Kesava is also described as being a "worshipper of Siva"; he opens his inscription was to record the grant of 375 halas of land and 296 Vatis in the service of lord Vatesvara "who has come into his world at Bhattapataka and is living here have given up the desire to live in Kailasa and that he gave to that Siva different kinds of attendants belonging to races". Isanadeva adds furthure that attracted by his reputation pleasing to the ears, the chiefs amongst the twice-born people arrived from all quarters and with their desires fulfilled, forgot their places of birth. So the policy of settling Brahmanas in south Sylhet that began with Bhutivarmma in the 6th century continued till 12th-13th centuries.

And this "worshipper of Siva" with Vaishanva alias later in life built a lofty stone temple dedicated to Kamasanisudana (Krishan) - as we come to know from Isandeva's inscription. Isanadvea however, begins his inscription with an adoration to Narayana and he too built another lofty temple for god madhukaitabhari (Vishnu). Does it mean that from a later period of Kesava's life this line became votaries of Vishnu? Does this policy of the Bhatera Devas help us in understanding the strong Vaishnava as well as Tantric tradition of Sylhet in medieval times? Changing faith in one god for another is not unknown during this century as has been exemplified by the Senas. Isanadeva's plate also provides us with another important information i.e. Kesavadeva later in life performed Tulapurushadana (gift of gold etc. equal to a man's weight amongst learned Brahamnas) and "the twice born people receiving riches looked like the tree of plenty adorned with gold ornaments. This dynasty duly upheld and nurtured the predominant Hindu traditions and culture handed down from the time of the kings of Kamarupa.

These two inscriptions are also remarkable in many other ways. Along with 375 halas of for maintain service to Vatesura Siva we learn Kesavadeva also donated 365 Vatis apparently to the Brahmans for the service of the god. The donation of Vatis along with the land is something we do not come in any other land grant in any other part of Bengal. If it is to be understood that each Vati was given to one Brahmana family that is 365 families, then this would be the third instance of settling a large number of Brahananas in Sylhet under royal patronage. Isanadeva's grant is concerned about the grant of 2 halas of land (including residential quarters) as a fief for the maintenance of Vanamali Kara the accountant general. Now this unique as we know of no other Bengal inscription so far that records the grant of a fief for the maintenance of an official of state. All the other inscriptions are records of religious nature - grants of land of gods, temples, mathas, monasteries and Brahamans. However grant of only 2 halas of land for the maintenance of a key state official is somewhat surprising. What is also interesting is that Isanadeva first eulogies his army chief Viradatta and then names him as the one who gives the order of the land grant - thus throwing light on the very powerful position of the army chief in the running of the kingdom. What is particularly remarkable is that the Bhatera plate No. 1 contains two lines in an unknown language except one word in Sanskrit i. e pradattah and may be a tribal language of the area of time. Tribal elements were quite numerous in Sylhet. What were these two lines for we do not know as yet. Was it imprecatory as has been suggested? But the imprecatory verse n Sanskrit is already there. There is the only inscription of early medival Bengal containing a line other than in the Sanskrit language. In this inscription the language of the schedule portion also has elements nearly approaching Bengali and local Sylhet dialects. A word often used is tathake, a Bangla word, however, with a local twist and meaning "there". Then gama for grama (village) and Katakhale which are Bangla words. Another interesting feature of the inscription is that besides the vatis to the Brahmans, may house including outhouses, kitchens, cowsheds etc. were given for the use of the various helping hands of the temple establishment like gapa (milkman), Kasya (bellmetal worker), napita (barber), rajaka (washerman), vaniya (goldsmith), navika (boatman), danakara (ivory worker), malo (fisherman) etc. and so here again like the Paschimbag inscription we are given the elaborate description of the various kinds of services that were required for running a temple or matha establishment and thus we are given a glimpse of the daily activities in these establishments. Another significant thing about Bhatera plate No. 1is that many of the places and villages and also rivers named in the donation portion retain their names almost unaltered till today and they have been identified tolerable accurately. Those identified palces are scattered over an extensive area spreading from Hobigonj through Maulvibazar with Bhatera-Baramchal block to cachar district including Karimganj in Assam and possible portions in Tripura. This perhaps gives an outline of the extent of th e Srihattarajya of the Bhatera kings.

Some interesting side - light is thrown on Sylhet history by a much - damaged copper plate found in May 1963 at Kalapur in Srimangal in Moulvibazar district of Sylhet. On paleographic considerations it can be placed in the 7th century A. D. circular seal attached to the palte represents the figure of the standing Gaja-Lakshmi her feel placed on a lotus. Two male attendants seat at her feet on two sides. Just below her feet and the louts but within the circle of the seal is the legend Kumaramatyaadhikaranasya also in relief. In the space between the right side of Lakshmi and the attendant is a small circular depression which contains the figure of a recumbent bull-the emblem of the issuer, Sri Marundanatha. This name is represented in relief just below but within the circle. Being in a bad state of preservation only part of it could be read by its decipherer K. K. Gupta. However , although deciphered only in parts its main purport is quite clear. Sri Marundanatha who was only a Samanta by this copper plate charter donated a plot of land in the forest region (atavibhukhanda) for the purpose of maintenance of the balicharusatra of god Anantanarayana and also for the maintainance of the math and the Brahamans attached to the establishments for the five daily sacrifices - panchamahayajanas. The land according to Gupta's computation comes to 630 bighas approximately. Here it may be recalled that Lokanatha - also a Samanta - whose copper pate inscription was recovered form somewhere in Comilla in 1905 and which has also been dated to the mid - seventh century granted land in forest region ( atavikhanda) for a temple dedicated also to Anantanarayna for maintainance of daily worship and for maintenance of a hundred Bramanas. The Lokanatha plate also bears the Gaja-Lakshmi emblem with the legends Kumaram-atyadhikaranasya and "Lokanathasya". Among the names of the kings of this line given in the Lokanatha palte is mentioned Srinatha as the second feudatory chief. It is to be noted that we ckme across the name of Samanta Srinatha in the Kalapur Copper Plate also and Guptasuggests that " it is very likely that Samatata Srinatha was the common ancestor of both Lokanatha and Marundanatha". The similarities between these two copper paltes-similar emblems on their seals, their common "natha"-ending names the common Srinatha of their lines in the two inscription,both giving land in the forest region, signifying both ruling in the 7th century in region which had extensive forest areas and both patronizing Vishnu worship-all these suggest perhaps a family link.

As regards their being contemporaries of the Khadgas some complication has been introduced by A. H Dani who on paleographic grounds would place the Lokanatha inscription in the first half of the seventh century A. D. and Khadgas to the later half of the 7th century A. D. Nihar Ranjan Roy would place it in the 8th century A.D. D.C. Sircar suggested that both Sridharana and Lokhnatha were feudatories of Paramesvara i.e King of Gauda.

Sylhet is one of the major city of Bangladesh. Which is situated in north-eastern region of the country and located on the northern bank of the Surma River and surrounded by the Jaintia, Khasi and Tripura hills. It was previously known as Shilhat, Sreehatta, and Jalalabad. Sylhet is nestled among picturesque tea plantations and lush green tropical forests. Sylhet (City) consists of 27 wards and 210 mahallas. The area of the town is 57.64 km. It has a population of 369425; male 54.68%, female 45.32%; density of population is 11,936 per km. Literacy rate among the town people is 66.9%. The rapid growth and expansion of Sylhet occurred during the colonial period. Sylhet Municipality was established in 1878. A devastated earthquake demolished almost the entire town on 12 June 1897. On the wreckage, a modern and European model new town was built later on. Many new roads were constructed in late 1890s. Sylhet became really connected to the other parts of the country with the establishment of an extension line of Assam-Bengal Railway in 1912-15. From the very beginning of the 20th century, importance of Sylhet city increased with the establishment of tea industry. In 1950s and 1960s, rapid urbanization took place in the town by the expatriate Sylhetis and still the process is going on. At present, Sylhet is the district-headquarter as well as the divisional headquarter of the districts of Sunamganj, Habibganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet..
